Many people have heard the name of Tina Barber, perhaps even more knew her as MaShiloh, breed founder of the magnificent Shiloh Shepherd. There is no doubt that MaShiloh dedicated much of her life to the creation of the breed were her passion, however those who knew Ma well knew that there was so much more to her life - her love and devotion to her family, her strength and enduring faith, her loyalty as a friend, her ability to teach and inspire people.
One of those perhaps most deeply affected by the loss of MaShiloh is Lisa her only daughter and the one designated to continue MaShilohs work with the breed. In the following tribute Lisa shares some of her own thoughts about MaShiloh and affirms her commitment to honoring her mother by following her dream.
MaShiloh - A true hero in so many ways. Ma dedicated her life to her dream of the Shiloh Shepherds and her family.
There were many others sides to Ma. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who would give anything to make her kids and grandkids happy. Although she couldn't give us everything we wanted, she would try her best. She was a true hero to all us kids as she raised us by herself as well as running her business and trying to fulfill her dream. She had her hands full but always seemed to pull off anything put in her path.
There was always a battle she had to fight but she always seemed to come out on top. As we got older and the Shilohs became a rare breed, I was blessed to get to travel all over with her. She was well on her way to completing her dream. This is when I was really inspired to follow her footsteps and decided I would help and do all I could to try to learn as much as I could.
She was so excited every time she knew she was going to have a new grandkid. She would do everything for them and had such a soft, loving side to her that most people never really got to see.
She was also a great friend, always there to listen and help as much as she could. She was one who would always help; but also hated to ask for it.
As far as teachers went, I have never met anyone who could teach like her. She would lighten right up when asked to teach something. I remember hanging on her every word and coming to her with "what if's" and "how abouts". We would do studies all the time and it felt so good to hear her say, "Right On!" or "I didn't think of that." or "Proud of you." She would only compliment or reward you if you truly excelled in your learning (or, at least, with me).
Most people know the harder, stubborn Ma. She was definitely that, and had to be in order to get through all she did and still move forward because she believed so strongly and so deeply in her vision. She was the strongest, most determined person I have ever met.
All us kids and grandkids were proud to call her Ma, and tell everyone about her and all that she has accomplished in her life. I am honored to have her as not only my mother, but best friend, partner, and mentor.
Ma will never be forgotten. Although she is no longer physically with us, she will always be in our hearts and thoughts. I am certain she is watching over us making sure we are doing right by her breed.
I have promised to continue her dream with the Shilohs, and have been asked many times if this is really what I want. Well, it may have started as her dream; but over the years it has become my dream, as well. So, yes. I am here for the long haul. I am sure, with some great people out there helping, we can fulfill it.
Ma has passed down an awesome legacy. It's time to make her proud. With that I would like to say, Thank you for all your help and support through this. This has been an extremely hard time for me and my family, but I promise to stay strong and move on.
A Personal Note:
11/30/11 It's 6 months since we had to say goodbye. Everyone tells me it will get better but it is a very slow heal. Now that it's the Holidays things just aren't the same without you around. When I was told Josh was going to be a dad all I could think about is how you would respond. On your birthday I just wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday, and on mine was to hear your voice. This month has had a lot of happy times but it's just not the same without you here. I miss our little talks and visits. You will always be in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. We all miss you and love you!!
